Cudillero is one of those postcards everyone wants to see on an Asturias getaway, but sleeping right in the village has its drawbacks: steep streets, scarce parking in high season and few options for families. The alternative many travellers choose is to stay 20 minutes away, in Pravia. From the Hotel PAX Casona del Busto you have Cudillero, the best beaches of the Bajo Nalón, Avilés and Cabo Peñas all less than 50 minutes away by car, without changing hotel every night.
Key points
- From Pravia to Cudillero it takes about 20 minutes by car (around 21 km).
- Playa del Silencio and Concha de Artedo beaches are less than 30 minutes from the hotel.
- Luarca, Cabo Peñas, Salinas and the Senda del Oso can all be visited as day trips, with no drive longer than 55 minutes.
- A comfortable base for families: family rooms, breakfast in the courtyard and a tourist information point at the hotel itself.
- Well connected with Madrid: Asturias Airport is 13 km from the hotel and Pravia is about 480 km from Madrid by road.
Why Pravia is the best place to stay near Cudillero
Anyone planning an Asturias getaway usually wants to see a lot in a few days: a fishing village, a couple of beaches, a lighthouse and, if travelling with children, something in nature. The challenge is not spending the whole trip packing and unpacking. That is why the question of where to stay in Pravia or anywhere else in the Bajo Nalón makes so much sense: the area sits in the middle of the Asturian coast and distances stay short in every direction.
Staying near Cudillero rather than in it has three practical advantages:
- Price and availability: in summer the village fills up earlier and accommodation is more limited.
- Car: Cudillero is explored on foot, but parking by the amphitheatre is difficult in August. Arriving in the morning from Pravia and leaving the car at the entrance of the village is much easier.
- Variety: from Pravia you are not just heading west. Avilés, Salinas, Oviedo and the Senda del Oso are just as close.
If you are also curious about the history of the building where you will sleep, a 16th-century palatial manor house, you can read about it in our guide to the charming hotel in Pravia.

What to see in Cudillero in one day
Cudillero is best explored on foot and without hurrying. The coloured houses are stacked in an amphitheatre above the harbour, and almost everything of interest is a few minutes’ walk away. The Turismo Cudillero website, run by the town council, publishes routes, opening times and the council’s events calendar.
The amphitheatre, the harbour and the square
Plaza de la Marina, next to the harbour, is the natural starting point. From there, lanes and stairways climb between the houses. It is best to arrive first thing, before it fills up, and watch the boats come in to the quay. At lunchtime, the cider houses and restaurants by the harbour revolve around the fish and seafood of the day.
The viewpoints over the village
To get the classic photo of Cudillero you have to climb. Several signposted viewpoints surround the amphitheatre and let you see the whole village with the harbour below. The walk to the lighthouse at the end of the quay completes the visit with views of the Cantabrian Sea. With small children, a baby carrier is better than a pushchair on the stairs.
Beaches near Cudillero worth the trip
The coast around Cudillero alternates wild coves and wider beaches. To check services, access and flags for each beach, the Turismo Asturias beach guide (in Spanish) is up to date and lets you filter by municipality.
Playa del Silencio
It is probably the most photographed beach in western Asturias: a pebble cove tucked beneath an amphitheatre of cliffs, with islets just off the shore. The last stretch of access is on foot down a steep path, so wear comfortable shoes. It has hardly any services, which is part of its charm.
Concha de Artedo
Wider and easy to reach, Concha de Artedo is the practical choice for a family day out near Cudillero. It combines sand and pebbles, has parking nearby and is only a few minutes from the village, so it fits well into the same day.
Cabo Vidío
It is not a beach, but it is on the way. The Cabo Vidío lighthouse looks out over sheer cliffs with one of the best views on this coast. It is a great place to watch the sunset after a day at the beach.
Beyond Cudillero: five nearby destinations worth visiting
The great advantage of staying in the Bajo Nalón is that in under an hour you can reach very different places. These are the five we recommend most often to our guests.
Luarca, the white town of the Costa Verde
About 40 minutes to the west, Luarca is another fishing town, larger than Cudillero and with a harbour that closes in between two hillsides. It is worth climbing to the chapel and the cemetery of La Atalaya, perched above the sea, and walking along the Río Negro. It makes a perfect full-day plan, combined with a beach in the municipality of Valdés.
Avilés and Salinas beach
Avilés has one of the best-preserved old towns in Asturias, with arcaded streets and palaces, and across the estuary the Niemeyer Centre, with its cultural programme. A few minutes away is Salinas, a long urban beach popular for surfing. At its far end, La Peñona is home to the Philippe Cousteau Anchor Museum, open-air and free, which children tend to love.
Cabo Peñas and Luanco
Cabo Peñas is the northernmost point of Asturias. Its cliffs, lighthouse and the paths around the cape form a protected landscape that is very easy to explore. On the way back, Luanco, a fishing town with a small harbour and promenade, is a good place to stop for lunch.
The Senda del Oso, the star plan with children
If you are travelling as a family, the Senda del Oso is a safe bet. It is a greenway along the old route of a mining railway between Tuñón, Proaza, Teverga and Quirós, flat and with tunnels, ideal by bike (there is rental in the area) or on foot. Near Proaza you can see the brown bear enclosure. From Pravia, the entrance to the path is about 55 minutes away.
Oviedo and Gijón, for a city day
If the weather does not cooperate, the two big Asturian cities are less than 40 minutes away. In Oviedo, the old town and the pre-Romanesque monuments of Mount Naranco; in Gijón, the Cimavilla district and the San Lorenzo beach promenade. Both have a good choice of museums for rainy days.
Three day routes from Casona del Busto
So you do not have to improvise, these three routes combine the destinations above into realistic days, with a return to sleep in Pravia:
| Route | Morning | Afternoon | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 1: Cudillero and its beaches | Cudillero: harbour, viewpoints and lunch in the village | Playa del Silencio or Concha de Artedo and sunset at Cabo Vidío | Couples and families |
| Route 2: Avilés, Salinas and Cabo Peñas | Old town of Avilés and Niemeyer Centre | Salinas beach, anchor museum and Cabo Peñas lighthouse | Everyone |
| Route 3: nature or sea | Senda del Oso by bike or Luarca and its harbour | Proaza and the bear enclosure, or La Atalaya in Luarca | Families with children or sea lovers |
With three or four nights at the hotel you can do all three routes and leave half a day free to stroll around Pravia. On the GDR Bajo Nalón website you will find more tourist resources for the area.

- By car: about 480 km, around five hours. On the A-66, take exit 30 towards Pravia and continue to Plaza María Cristina.
- By train: there are direct trains from Madrid to Oviedo and, from there, a direct bus to Pravia with a stop three minutes’ walk from the hotel. Timetables and tickets at Renfe.
- By plane: Asturias Airport is only 13 km from the hotel, with connections to Madrid.
If you plan to explore the coast as we suggest in this article, renting a car at the airport is usually the most flexible option.
